Opening in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the early 1890s, Hubley produced cast iron toys, doorstops and cast iron bookends until the company closed in 1965. Cast iron had been in use for nearly 2500 years. The lion has the legend "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" (which translates to Swiss faith and Virtue) above it along the top edge of the bookends.
